Chapter 71 – the rant

Him again.

Comments on this chapter have been disallowed, as is usual for Renard.

Today I saw a movie that I certainly never intended to watch: Twilight.  I am opposed to this series on principle, mainly because it teaches young girls that creepy stalkers make perfect boyfriends, but also because I’m sick of American journalists calling it “the next Harry Potter“, when the Twilight novels aren’t so well written as Harry Potter, and Twilight-mania is largely confined to the USA anyway.

In spite of all this, I was determined to watch the movie with an open mind, if only because I had been forbidden from mocking the film since I was surrounded by Robert Pattinson fans (although they kept calling him Cedric Diggory).

It wasn’t an awful film, although I can’t honestly say I enjoyed it.  Bits of it were good.  The soundtrack was excellent, both in the choice of songs and the original score.  Also, the baseball scene was awesome.  The rest I found fairly dull.  It probably doesn’t help that I’ve never seen the appeal of vampires, much less sparkly ones.

Incidentally, Edward seems to have a very strange definition of vegetarianism.  He uses the word to mean that he doesn’t eat humans, only animals.  Last I heard, deer were not plants.  But hey, maybe they’ve been reclassified by science and I didn’t hear about it.

I also saw the Survivors series finale today.  Very epic and intense.  They had to go and end it on a cliffhanger, though, didn’t they?  I’m very much hoping we’ll get another series.

Chapter 57 – the rant

21 11 2008

Silly Bradley.  Fictional characters never get to enjoy normal lives!

Wonder what Bradley is so happy about…

I didn’t like Wednesday’s episode of Heroes very much.  It was far too dependant on continuity, and they still screwed up – Elle was vicious and psychotic when we first saw her, so her personality in that episode was a complete rewrite.  Still, I guess it had its moments.  I like Angela and Linderman more now than I used to.

Yesterday I donated blood for the first time ever, which was an interesting experience.  It was funny, because when I got there, I saw three of my friends sat waiting to donate there.  We hadn’t arranged to meet up or anything!  It was a weird coincidence, but one I was grateful for, because I think I would have been a lot more nervous without people to talk to.

All the same, I was still pretty nervous.  When it was my turn to give blood (I was the last of the four of us), the nurse thought I looked so worried and asked me if my friends had dragged me along, and told me that I didn’t have to donate if I didn’t want to.  I assured her that I was fine, that I had come of my own choice, and that I wanted to donate.

Everyone always says it doesn’t hurt.  I didn’t believe them, but to my surprise, it really didn’t; not in the slightest.  I was determined not to look at the blood coming out, but in the end I couldn’t help myself.  I turned my head to wave at my friends, who were sat at a table eating biscuits, and I saw the tube sticking out of my arm; the tube had turned red.  The situation seemed so absurd – dude, that’s my blood! – that I burst out laughing, and I couldn’t stop for some time.

Of the four of us, only one of us had given blood before, and she was the only one who managed to stay calm and composed the whole time (of the other two, one almost fainted, and the other couldn’t stop talking very fast).  There was a huge box of biscuits on the table, and we ate our way through rather more than our fair share.  So while I expect the nurses were glad to see young people turning up – it’s mainly older people who donate – I think they were even more relieved to see us go!

You know, I felt so elated afterwards.  It’s a great feeling, you know?  Knowing that by donating you have probably saved someone’s life.  As I said at the time: “Go us!”

I saw a friend at school today who I hadn’t seen in ages, so that was cool.  She’d only come in to talk to one of the teachers about something, but it was nice to see her again.  There are so many people who I just haven’t seen since they finished their A2s.

Everyone seems to be turning 18 lately.  In a bit I’m heading into town for yet another friend’s birthday celebrations.

Bradley can blog on the go, thanks to her snazzy Pocket Computer!

I could just say laptop or BlackBerry or something, but whatever.

Heroes was cool, but weird.  I liked Mohinder a bit more in Wednesday’s episode than I have in some time.  I do not like Arthur or Angela, however.

I’m told the next episode is awful.

While Bradley is going to martial arts class, I’m going to my friends’ 18th birthday celebrations.  The dilemma of the disliked person mentioned in the last rant has resolved itself rather neatly, because he’s decided not to go for his own reasons, I think to do with location and money.  I just hope nobody said anything insensitive to him.

Chapter 54 – Somewhere I Belong

14 11 2008

i got back to hercynia on monday night. i’d have blogged about it sooner, but i’ve had a lot of catching up to do, both in terms of people and of schoolwork. i was worried i wouldn’t have a job anymore, but i spoke to monique and she said that of course i still have my job under the circumstances. so that’s something i needn’t have worried about. i’ve spoken to sakura since i got back, and she’s ok. she’s back at school too.

when i got back, my mum and a bunch of my friends were all waiting for me at the airport. i was so glad to see them all! i don’t normally hug people very much, but i hugged everyone there. i was so glad to see them all again! i felt too overwhelmed to speak. it was all i could do to stop myself misting up. still, i was so tired, and very glad to get to bed. visiting a country on the other side of the world and then travelling in the dark plays havoc with your sleep patterns.

i’ve enrolled in martial arts classes at the gym near the south dock. iaru’s brother adam goes there regularly, and he recommended it. i think after all that has happened, it’s vital that i learn to defend myself. i’m on my way down there now. wish me luck!

Chapter 45 – the rant

30 10 2008

It would be horrible to go through what Bradley’s friends must be going through right now.

Webcams have essentially replaced phones in this future.  Hence “phonecams”.  Phones and cameras are already coming together, so it really wasn’t a stretch of the imagination.

Yesterday’s Heroes – what can I say, except “yikes”?  Yikes.  Why did the episode continue?  Why are we supposed to care about the dude on the bed after what just happened??  What’s going on?

Vortex man was cool.  At last, an original superpower!  Well, there’s probably some obscure Marvel or DC comic or whatever that had someone with vortex powers, but I don’t care.  It seemed original to me.  At least it wasn’t yet another series one power being reassigned to a new character.

I also went to the cinema the other day, for the first time in I-can’t-remember-how-long.  We saw High School Musical 3.  Believe me, that wasn’t my choice.  For the first half of the movie I was just too appalled for words, apart from the occasional sarcastic comment.  Then we got to the scrapyard scene, and I couldn’t stop laughing.  By the end of it, I was wearing an expression one of my friends described as “open-mouthed glee”.  I’m pretty sure it wasn’t glee, but I will concede that I was probably better off watching that than Saw V.

Meme Time 2

25 09 2008

This is the first non-story-related post I’ve written in a while.

I was tagged by sulz to do a meme.  This one has some rules, which I’m going to break:

RULE #1 People who have been tagged must write their answers on their blogs and replace any question that they dislike with a new question formulated by themselves.

RULE #2 Tag 6 people to do this quiz and they cannot refuse. These people must state who they were tagged by and cannot tag the person whom they were tagged by continue this game by sending it to other people.

Sadly, I’m too lazy to come up with any new questions, so this is identical to sulz’s version of the meme.

1. If your lover betrayed you, what will your reaction be?
Shock, anger, and eventually forgiveness, I would think.

2. If you can have a dream to come true, what would it be?
Everything being right.  Whatever the hell that means.

3. Whose butt would you like to kick?
Nobody’s!  (Unless they really deserved it…)

4. What would you do with a billion dollars?
Most of it would go to charity, and the rest would be a handy reserve for whenever I’m short on cash.

5. Will you fall in love with your best friend?

6. Which is more blessed, loving someone or being loved by someone?
Being loved.

7. How long do you intend to wait for someone you really love?
As long as necessary… possibly.

8. If the person you secretly like is already attached, what would you do?
Try to feel happy for them.  Fail miserably.  Be nice to them.

9. If you like to act with someone, who will it be? Your gf/bf or an actress/actor?
Actress/actor.  Acting can be harder with someone you know personally.

10. What takes you down the fastest?
When someone is unexpectedly mad at me.

11. How would you see yourself in ten years’ time?
Probably working in a supermarket someplace.  Or unemployed, I expect.

12. What’s your fear?
That should be plural.  Death, disease, the usual lot.

13. What kind of person(s) do you think the person(s) who tagged you is/are?
A wise and witty blogger who writes about her life and the world around her.

14. Would you rather be single and rich or married but poor?
Depends how rich we’re talking about and who it is I’d be married to.

15. What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
Attempt to force myself out of bed.

16. Would you give all in a relationship?

17. If you fall in love with two people simultaneously, who would you pick?
Whichever I thought was most in love with me.

18. Would you forgive and forget no matter how horrible a thing that special someone has done?
Yes – in time.

19. The one thing you can never forgive in love?
I don’t believe anything is truly unforgivable.

20. List 6 people to tag:
You, you, you, you, you, and you. Yes, you, the reader.

Ta da!

Damn, I’m tired today.

Chapter 25 – the rant

22 09 2008

Johnny forgot to mention that too many crisps can seriously harm your health.  What?  They can!

This chapter does contain some direct sulz influence.  Did you notice it?

I went to my great aunt and uncle’s golden wedding anniversary in Yorkshire this weekend, which is why I wasn’t online.  It nice to see the family again, including plenty of relatives I’ve only seen about once before in my life, from everywhere from Wales to Australia.

I’ve watched the first chapter of LG15: the resistance, the new fantasy-ish web series by EQAL, the people behind lonelygirl15 and KateModern.  It’s pretty good, actually; certainly much more professional looking than lonelygirl15, although whether it turns out to have the charm or strong storytelling of KateModern remains to be seen.

And while I’m talking about shows, I might as well say that I’m looking forward to Merlin, the BBC’s new family drama.  I taped the first episode, but I haven’t seen it yet.  I know it’s not going to beat Doctor Who, but here’s hoping it’s better than Robin Hood.

Happy harvest!
