Chapter 12 – the rant

25 08 2008

Bradley reminded me of myself a bit in this chapter.

I realise the plot isn’t moving forward very quickly.  I wanted to introduce the main characters properly before introducing too many plot elements.

***

It was my poshest friend’s 18th birthday on Saturday (seriously, he has a top hat, a swimming pool and a double-barrelled surname).  It was fun.  We spent most of the time listening to Led Zeppelin, drinking cider and playing Time Splitters 2, when I wasn’t attempting to socialise and doubtless committing faux pas left, right and centre.  There was only one other person from school attending, and like me, I think he felt a bit out of place.  It was great fun though.  We pushed the birthday boy into the pool, which was a laugh.  He wasn’t particularly happy about that, but I passed him his top hat so that he could regain some of his dignity.  You can never look undignified in a top hat.

i don’t mind the slow bit, cos you’re posting it almost every day, but i have yet to see the science fiction element in it! other than it being set in the future, that is… will you have like restaurants which serve micro-food (food in a pill sort of thingies)?😛

Oh, good. I’m glad you think its updating regularly enough!

Thank you for the feedback.🙂 I will try to incorporate a bit more futuristic content into the story.

Perhaps “science fiction” isn’t the right term. The differences between the world of ‘the experiment’ and the real world are mainly cultural. The technology is, for the most part, like present day technology, only better and more ubiquitous. There aren’t restaurants selling food pills, because hardly anybody would buy them!

Fancy wishing [or even almost wishing] hols were over, our school was surrounded by woods and I used to sit and look out the window and mourn

I never realised food pills were so popular! Maybe I should work them into the story at some point…

Would that be mourning your imprisonment in the classroom? Remember, though, Bradley is feeling directionless at the moment. Also, Bradley is 16, which means an extra long summer holiday (although I seem to remember wishing the holiday would go on forever when I was 16!). It must be nice, having a school surrounded by wooded scenery. The view out of my school windows wasn’t very scenic – I almost suspect they planned it that way.😦

you could make it like the mcdonald’s of today.😀 like kids go there but the older generation still prefers good old-fashioned food.

I think food pills sound more like the healthy option. You know, like each pill contains exactly the right number of calories and the right amount of nutrients to act as part of a balanced diet.

OK, I promise that food pills will make an appearance, probably when you least expect them!🙂

Food pills! Well, I hope your characters like them more than I think I would! That’s a great story about your posh friend. I don’t think I’ve ever actually known anyone who OWNS a tophat! Did he wear it IN the pool?😉

Hopefully they taste more food-like than pill-like!

Thank you. I don’t think the top hat was something he would normally wear, but it was still his. He didn’t wear it in the pool, amusing as that would be, but he did put it on when he came out.🙂

the food pill may be small but can be mighty in taste. imagine popping a small pill into your mouth and have the whole food ‘burst’. you know, like those cookies with a soft centre filling. imagine eating a french fry pill and have that all the potato-ey goodness explode in your mouth, complete with the right amount of ketchup,,, and zero calories!

I did wonder if people were aware of that yet.🙂

Don’t worry, Muse. In this story, it won’t always be initially clear who someone is. That’s the nature of online communication!
