Beware the “stealthy” virus

14 01 2008

According to the BBC, a Master Boot Record rootkit virus is stealing the details of people’s online bank accounts.  The virus, Mebroot, is very difficult to detect and has infected more than 5,000 computers.  Apparently, “Computers running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 that are not fully patched are all vulnerable to the virus.”

Ah, the joy of technology.  Helping criminals find whole new ways to screw you up.

I hate viruses.  Virii.  Viruss.  Whatever the hell they’re called.

I just don’t get the thrill some people get from releasing a virus. Can’t these people just go see a movie instead? Or invent a cure for something?

Well, sometimes it’s part of some sort of scheme, for example, to hack into something valuable, or, as in this case, to steal bank account details. That makes sense, even if I don’t approve of it. Sometimes, though, people seem to make viruses out of pure mean spiritedness. They probably just have too much time on their hands.
